Re-designing an Album Cover

Tonight I got a little carried away pre-paring for a drawing visualization project which involves re-designing a cover of one of our favourite music artist's album covers. Everyone knows how much I love Drake, and even though I am waiting anxiously for his latest album 'Take Care' which is in stores November 15th, I decided to re-design one of his mix tape album covers 'So Far Gone'. This mix tape is what put Drake on the map for amazing artists of all time. I played around on photoshop looking carefully at typographic choices as well as background textures and patterns. I really like these so I thought I'd show them of. I think we're meant to draw for this project but here's a little preview of what I'm leaning towards!

Drawing Visualization - Model Drawings

Silhouette drawing of model
For this model drawing class we switched it up by using colours and different media. She wanted us to draw the model in a linear fashion using a lighter colour in pencil crayon and then highlight the contours of the body using a darker pencil crayon. The colours I used almost make it seem as if the drawing is 3D, an anaglyph image. The last image is a sample of the silhouette drawings we did in class using black ink.

Drawing Visualization - Water Comic (A Mermaid Wish)

My comic is finally complete! The whole idea of the assignment was to create a comic strip based on the theme of water. My story was about a girl named Anna who lived on the island of Bermuda (the place I call home) and she absolutely loves the water. She is captain on the swim team, surfs on a regular and loves the beach. One day while relaxing on the beach she heres a huge splash, which is followed by a blinding light and soon she is carried down to the depths of the sea. In the process she transforms into a mermaid. She sees an beautiful underwater sea goddess who approaches her and tells her she has been waiting for her for a very long time because she is Anna's mother.

The media I used for this project was water colour pencils, water colour, indian inks and markers. I love mixing media. The whole cartoon style was done in anime. I have always loved anime but it was my first time trying it out in full. I'm so pleased with the results!

Color in Context - Sphere of Commerce

For communication design we were required to take an photograph of shop windows, and stores and use the pointilize effect in photoshop and the gaussian blur as well and then pick out the 5 main colours that we see within the photograph. When using the pointilize effect in photoshop on a photograph it points out many colours that you would have never thought would be in the photo. I had fun during this process so I did two photos. My favourite Bubble Tea shop and clothing store Aritzia.

Halloween is here!

My pumpkin!

Halloween season is officially here. That means warm orange, yellows and burgundies. I couldn't wait to get into the spirit and carve some pumpkins and decorate the apartment. I got my roommate and we decided to make a night out of it. Nothing like fun DIY arts and crafts :)

Designing Adverts

Last week I helped a friend of mine at OCAD who also studies Graphic Design. She needed a model for an ad campaign project assignment. The brand she chose was Guess, which required me to wear all denim. She mimicked the style of the Guess ads by making it slightly provocative and putting the images in black and white. Here's how they turned out. See more of what projects she's up to at www.tanvimalik0.blogspot.com

Graphic Design Bible

I'm so glad I bought this book. Graphic Design Pocket Essentials by Bob and Maggie Gordon is a great buy for students or graphic designers who want to learn or brush up on the essential skills, tips and techniques within the design industry. From print, to packaging, to web design, you'll learn everything you need to know. One of the authors was a professor at Kingston University London, which is a university I spent a year at doing a Graphic Design BA Bridging course.

More still life drawings!!

Looking at movement of the body. The model kept moving and we had to continually change the way her body was positioned.

Looking at deep shadow. Higher to lower tones of light.

Still life drawing!

Focusing on the circular motion of muscle tissue

Red Obsession

So....recently I've been addicted to red. Something about the colour just draws me to it. I guess everyone goes through their phases of colour when it comes to things they choose to buy and wear, but I think that the colours we choose to buy have a lot to do with our personalities. My thought on this lead me to look up some facts about the colour red. I guess I choose my colours well ;)

The color red is most often associated with power and passion. It is a fierce and emotionally intense color. Red symbolizes speed, sexuality, and style. Fast cars are red. Beautiful women wear red clothes and red lipstick. Red is also the color of romance and love. If you want to express your love for a woman with flowers, the flowers must be red. In all cases, whether red is worn by a woman, or used in home décor, it will always attract attention.
